Healing for Congo Women Launching First Fundraising Event
Oprah & Lisa Shannon Inspire Toronto Grassroots Action
TORONTO, March 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Healing for Congo Women, a grassroots movement founded by Kiernan Antares, announces an inaugural fundraising event on Saturday, March 6th 2010 benefiting Women for Women International's Congo program.
At this unique full-day event when you give, you receive - gifts from and for the heart. With every $20 donation to this cause, people can enjoy a variety of elements designed to heal the heart and lift the spirits. The morning segment includes a presentation by Kiernan Antares on the challenges Congolese women are facing and how Healing for Congo Women intends to help. Musical performances by Juno Award-Winning World/Roots/Soul Artist Brenda MacIntyre; award-winning composer, musician and performer Michael Moon; and a special Divine Blessing Ceremony performed by author and spiritual healer Kiernan Antares accompanied by Ethereal, Mystical and Sacred Musician Paul Gasztold (PAVEL) will complete the morning program. The afternoon segment includes individual 20-minute sessions with choice of practitioners to receive energetic healings, spiritual guidance, or tarot and psychic readings.
All of the money raised goes towards helping Congolese women rebuild their war-torn lives. These efforts can help the women to achieve living necessities, education surrounding human rights and business skills training to become active, thriving and leading citizens in their communities.
The Congo presents one of the world's deadliest emergencies to date. More than 5 million people have died since 1998. Gang rape, mutilation and brutal torture are a daily reality for women of all ages and the children of the Congo. A multi-million dollar trade in three minerals that assist our cell phones, computers, and video games to function is fueling this violence. Nicholas Kristof, American journalist, author, columnist and winner of two Pulitzer Prizes says, "This is the cause of our time." Based on recent figures Kristof estimates that deaths in the Congo are nearing 7 million, surpassing that of the Holocaust.
Antares, who first learned about the situation during an episode of Oprah on October 1, 2009, says, "I was in shock and couldn't breathe. I felt so helpless and the thought that kept running through my head was 'what could I do?'" When she learned about Lisa Shannon's efforts with Run for Congo Women that has changed the lives of thousands of people, she was inspired. Antares capitalized on her talents and founded this grassroots movement to create awareness and change.
On the same Oprah show Kristof stated that people need to step up and help provide opportunity, education and empowerment to women and the way to do this is through grassroots movements. He stated, "This isn't just a do-gooder issue, it's an issue of national security."
Antares heard the call and asks others to join her in making a difference in the world. Especially in helping Congolese women as it has reached epic and horrific proportions, stating, "These women are asking for our help, they are the future of the Congo and I want them to know we care enough to do something to help give them hope for a better way of life."
Healing for Congo Women's Inaugural event is on Saturday, March 6th from 9:30am to 5:00pm at Unity Church of Mississauga, 3075 Ridgeway Drive, Unit 6, Mississauga, Ontario L5L 5M6.
Kiernan Antares is an author, innovative healer and spiritual healer dedicated to transforming lives around the world and awakening the hearts of humanity.
