Hamburg Sud Chooses Carrier Corp.'s PrimeLINE(R) Units to Improve Efficiency of Refrigerated Container Fleet
FARMINGTON, Conn., Feb. 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Hamburg Sud, one of the top five refrigerated container carriers worldwide, recently upgraded its fleet with 3,000 containers incorporating the industry's most energy efficient PrimeLINE® container refrigeration units from Carrier Corp., a business unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
Seeking to qualify refrigeration units with the lowest cost of ownership, Hamburg Sud turned to Cambridge Refrigeration Technology, Cambridge, England, to conduct operational trials and laboratory tests on all refrigeration units and energy-saving software solutions on the market, according to Hamburg Sud's Martin Schoeler, deputy director, Logistics Technology.
"With the increase in fuel prices over much of the last two years, the industry changed a lot," Schoeler said, explaining that energy consumption issues "got more important from the cost side, from the environmental side and from the customer side, because they are looking at that in more detail."
"Carrier's PrimeLINE unit proved to be a superior model when it comes to efficiency compared to other manufacturers," Schoeler said, adding that with so much of Hamburg Sud's business dependent on refrigerated trade, total cost of ownership of refrigerated containers is especially important.
"When compared to the industry average, these 3,000 PrimeLINE units are expected to save enough energy over their life of operation to avoid approximately 70,000 tons of carbon emissions, equivalent to removing more than 1,000 cars from the road over the same period," said John Mandyck, Carrier's vice president for Sustainability & Environmental Strategies. "PrimeLINE is another example of Carrier's two-decade leadership with sustainable products and operations."
