Habitat for Humanity - New York City Commemorates September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance by Joining With Volunteers and Businesses Affected by 9/11 to Build Homes for Hard-Working Families in Brooklyn
VOLUNTEERS HONOR THE ANNIVERSARY BY DEDICATING A DAY TO SERVING MEMBERS OF THEIR COMMUNITY
NEW YORK, Sept. 10, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Volunteers with Habitat for Humanity - New York City will commemorate the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance by building affordable homes for working families in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. Held on September 11, 2012, the special event includes volunteers from the New York Stock Exchange, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, members of the military and people who helped with 9/11-related relief activities.
Led by Habitat for Humanity – New York City (Habitat-NYC) construction leaders and AmeriCorps members, volunteers will work together to build eight homes in a multi-family building at 836 Jefferson Avenue in Brooklyn. These homes are funded in part through the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) Neighborhood Stabilization Program Round 2. Habitat-NYC is constructing 100 homes in Brooklyn as part of the initiative.
Following the September 11th terrorist attacks, Americans united in a remarkable spirit of patriotism and compassion. Given the tragedy and heroism associated with 9/11, family members believed the best way to mark the anniversary was to remember the innocent lives lost and to join with others in service efforts that met local needs and reclaimed the spirit of unity that followed 9/11. In 2009, the U.S. Congress passed bipartisan legislation, signed by President Barack Obama, which formally recognized September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance.
"Habitat for Humanity – New York City is honored to help remember those affected by the September 11th attacks through this day of volunteering and service," said Rachel Hyman, Acting Executive Director at Habitat for Humanity – New York City.
