Green Choice Carpet Joins the Fight Against Indoor Toxic Chemicals to Entire NYC Area

• Air pollution levels inside the home can be up to five times higher than outdoor levels, and even 100 times higher in some circumstances according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) research.
• According to the findings of a separate EPA study, toxic chemicals in household cleaners are so hazardous they are three times more likely to cause cancer than outdoor air.
• Women working in the home may have a 54% higher risk of developing cancer than women working outdoors, and this is likely to be down to the chemicals used in household cleaning products.

The company is not alone in its concerns about toxins in the house and office. Last year saw the launch of the Green Clean Schools program as part of a wider Health School Campaign. The Green Clean Schools program was designed to protect children from exposure to harmful chemicals within schools.

Yaniv Nir said: "Green Choice Carpet is a family business. We were alerted to the potential harm that chemicals posed to our own children and didn't want to inject the same risk into our clients' premises."

The carpet cleaning firm was set up 20 years ago in Brooklyn and has now expanded to cover the entire New York City area. Yaniv puts this down to the fact that people are starting to realize the dangers of household cleaning chemicals, but not quickly enough. When they do, it is difficult to find a firm that doesn't use them.

"There is no current legal requirement for commercial cleaning companies to research how their products might be harming human health," says Yaniv, "so firms have a tendency to think only about cleaning performance and costs."

"Green, environmentally friendly cleaning products are just as effective as their toxic alternatives. The difference is that we can clean beds and mattresses to eradicate bed bugs and mites, for example, with any risk of harm or allergic reaction for the people using them."
