Goodrich Foundation Awards Grant to Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation for Innovative Engineering Course
-- $25,000 grant encourages minority students to study engineering and science for future work in aerospace industry
CHARLOTTE, N.C., Jan. 26, 2010 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Goodrich Foundation has awarded the Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation in Phoenix, Ariz. a $25,000 grant to fund a new course at South Mountain Community College (SMCC) designed to encourage women and minority students to study science, math, technology and engineering. SMCC is a federally-designated Minority Serving Institution where over half of the student population comes from traditionally underserved ethnic groups.
The grant will cover items such as student tuition, supplies, equipment and instructor fees. The innovative course includes hands-on student design projects, such as a balloon launch, as well as traditional structured classroom and lab work. Students will apply their newly learned skills toward completing a challenging design project before the semester ends.

The Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization designated by the Maricopa County Community College District to receive and manage gifts on behalf of its ten colleges, two skill centers and multiple satellite centers.
