NEW DELHI, March 22, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
The Energy and Resource Institute (TERI) today launched its annual flagship publication entitled, "TERI Energy Data Directory and Yearbook (TEDDY)" which is a state-of-the-art compilation of energy and environment data. Since its inception in 1986, the publication has become a reference document and source of extensive information on India by which energy decision-makers are able to arrive at insights which help to plan for the future.

The book highlights the fact that Indian economy is heavily dependent on fossil fuels to meet its energy needs. Coal and oil together accounted for 86% of the total energy supply in India. Given the limited and unevenly distributed supply of non-renewable resources, it will become extremely difficult to meet India's growing energy demand by relying on conventional energy alone. Harvesting renewable energy in a decentralized manner is one of the options in meeting the challenges of providing energy access in India.
Reflecting on the need to move towards sustainable use of energy, Dr. RK Pachauri, Director General, TERI, says, "Energy use and its implications are a subject of growing interest and concern in the country today. Extensive use of fossil fuels for industrial development during the last century has been the largest contributor to carbon dioxide emissions. While this form of energy use is likely to continue, at least in the near future, enhancing efficiency in generation and consumption of energy would be the main strategy for development with minimized greenhouse gas emissions." He emphasized on the co-benefits of renewables on environment sustainability and socio-economic development.
Mr. RK Batra, Distinguished Fellow, TERI reiterated that there is a need for sound energy planning. He further emphasized on the growing importance of the reliable energy statistics which are a prerequisite to understand the existing energy scenario and to frame sound future policies.
The launch will witness the presence of eminent people including BK Chaturvedi (Member, Planning Commission), Ratan Wattal (Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy), Dr. RK Pachauri (Director General, TERI) and Mr. RK Batra (Distinguished Fellow, TERI) among others.
About TEDDY
TEDDY (TERI Energy Data Directory and Yearbook), is an annual publication brought out by TERI since 1986 which provides updated information on the energy supply sectors (coal and lignite, oil and gas, power, and renewable energy sources) as well as the energy-consuming sectors (agriculture, industry, transport, residential, and commercial sectors). Given the relevance of linkages between the energy and environment, topics on local and global environment have also been dealt with in detail.
About TERI
From microbiology to global climate change, from smoke-filled rural kitchens to plush corporate boardrooms, from schoolchildren to heads of state, no sphere of human endeavour is unfamiliar to TERI. Headed by world-renowned economist and Nobel Prize winning climate scientist, Dr. RK Pachauri, TERI is best described as an independent, not-for-profit research institute focused on energy, environment, and sustainable development and devoted to efficient and sustainable use of natural resources.
