The company will continue the design and manufacture of sports amphibians such as the GIBBS Quadski. Gibbs Sports Amphibians currently has nearly 100 employees and is expected to hire more than 200 additional hourly and salaried employees as its production of high-speed amphibians (HSAs) ramps up during the next 12-to-24 months.
Jenkins said the company will announce plans for an assembly facility for sports amphibians in the United States this summer.
"Our technology represents a major breakthrough in the development of amphibians, allowing high performance on land and water with amazingly quick transition times," Jenkins noted. "These innovative, high-performance products will give consumers for the first time the freedom to enjoy an entirely new and unique land-and-water experience."
Founded by New Zealand entrepreneur Alan Gibbs, Gibbs began work on the development of high-speed amphibians in 1996. Today the company holds more than 100 patents and has designed technology platforms for consumer, commercial and first responder use.
Earlier this year the company unveiled the GIBBS Phibian, an entirely new type of amphibian with a variety of commercial, rescue, logistics and law enforcement applications.
"Constructed primarily of carbon fiber, the GIBBS Phibian is a multi-mode, multi-mission HSA that already has generated considerable interest within the law enforcement, first responder and disaster relief communities," Jenkins reported. "It's a rugged, capable vehicle that will provide an unprecedented degree of freedom to operate with speed in a wide variety of environments."
