Kids and teens supercharge their summer and unleash their power to change the world. The first 2,000 heroes to report back receive gifts and all are eligible for one of ten $500 mini-grants.
NEW YORK, July 3, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- School's out and super heroes are in! GenerationOn, Points of Light's youth service enterprise, is empowering kids all over the country to use their summer to take action and make their mark through their summer 2012 campaign,"The World Needs More Community Action Heroes." With kids, young and old, flocking to movie theaters for superhero blockbusters, generationOn is harnessing that excitement and encouraging young people to join forces to do good this summer.
"During the summer, kids – and their parents – are looking for ways to have fun and make a difference," said Concetta Bencivenga, executive director of generationOn. According to the report, Growing to Greatness, 94 percent of U.S. youth, age 8 to 21, report they want to be involved in making the world a better place. By getting involved with this campaign, kids will have an opportunity to become super-powered forces for good in their communities.
GenerationOn and its campaign sponsor, Hasbro, Inc., want to give kids the opportunity to transform themselves and their communities through service. Young people who volunteer just one hour a week are more likely to engage in positive behavior (Search Institute). The World Needs More Community Action Heroes campaign empowers young people to get involved in positive action. Examples include real-life heroes like 13-year-old Cassandra Lin, who saved the world from 1.6 million pounds of CO2 emissions, and 18-year-old Joe Burgum, who collected 97 tons of food.
To become a Community Action Hero, kids can log on to the generationOn website at https://CommunityActionHeroes.generationOn.org. They can select a project that speaks to their inner hero in the issue area they care about such as: animals, literacy, health, emergency preparedness, environment, homelessness, hunger, the military or an issue of their choice. Kids empower each other by sharing stories on the Action Heroes website. At the end of the campaign on Aug. 20, 2012, generationOn will award grants to 10 heroes to continue to make their mark on the world.
