Gene Haas Foundation Donates $1 Million For Machine Technology Scholarships At Glendale Community College Ceremony

GLENDALE, Calif., Sept. 9, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- At a special ceremony at Glendale Community College in Glendale, California, the Gene Haas Foundation donated $1 million to the SME Education Foundation to award scholarships to 1,000 men and women for careers in machining and manufacturing. Scholarships will be distributed to Glendale Community College and other public colleges, private institutions, and nonprofit organizations with training programs throughout the United State and Europe. SME is committed to inspiring, preparing and supporting the next generation of manufacturing engineers and technologists through manufacturing education.

Gene Haas made a rare public appearance at the private reception and met with over 100 special guests and elected officials that included Congressman Adam Schiff, Congresswoman Julia Brownley, and Glendale Mayor Dave Weaver.  

Manufacturing and machining training has been a major part of Glendale College's curriculum since 1940 and today they are a leader in manufacturing training in Southern California. The College's Professional Development Center, headed by Executive Director Kimberly Holland, uses Haas equipment exclusively and has trained 33,000 employees from 4,300 companies since 1985.

The Gene Haas Foundation has awarded over $14 million in scholarship funds for students entering technical training programs, especially machinist-based certificate and degree programs. Haas Automation of Oxnard, California, is the largest CNC machine tool builder in the Western World.
