Fujitsu Microelectronics Group Issues 2009 Environmental Report
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Feb. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA) announced today that the Fujitsu Microelectronics Group has issued its "Environmental Report 2009." The report discusses the company's environmental philosophy and approach, and highlights the environmental progress the Group made last year throughout the entire product lifecycle for the electronic devices and semiconductors it handles.
The report is available now at http://www.fujitsu.com/downloads/EDG/binary/pdf/catalogs/a00000222e.pdf.
"We believe it is our mission to help our customers enhance their products' contribution to a low-carbon society through the development and supply of energy-efficient and compact eco-device solutions," said Haruki Okada, president of Fujitsu Microelectronics Limited.
The report details how the Group strives to improve the environmental characteristics of its products from development and procurement through manufacturing, distribution and usage.
In the development stage, the Fujitsu Microelectronics Group is committed to developing eco-friendly "Green" and "Super Green" products. All products undergo a "Green Product Assessment" to evaluate factors such as energy efficiency and chemical suitability. Only when the assessment score is 90 or higher does development begin.
For procurement, the Group promotes improved Environmental Management Systems (EMS) and Chemical Substances Management Systems (CMS) at its suppliers. Green distribution activities include reduced packaging and the use of specialized containers. The Group strictly follows regulations on chemical substances, and controls the amount of potentially harmful substances. Specific activities related to greenhouse gases management, chemical waste management, environmental risk management and environmental IC packages are highlighted.
The report also details significant progress in developing low-power LSIs and high-performance, varied device solutions, which help customers develop compact, lightweight products. The report details examples of "Green" products, including a DC brushless motor control MCU, a universal DC/DC converter, an automotive graphics display controller, a 1394 automotive controller, high-speed security processors, and an H.264/MPEG-2 full HD transcoder, which achieves low power consumption in a high-performance, small-form factor.
Finally, the report describes Fujitsu's commitment to the Green Factory and Green Office initiative, which actively monitors the environmental friendliness of its factories and business offices. Fujitsu's internal and external environmental communication programs are also described.
"We believe improvements that encompass the entire product lifecycle are essential, including improvements in the manufacturing phase, energy-efficient design in the design phase, green procurement in the materials procurement phase, and reduced packing in the shipping phase," said Haruyoshi Yagi, a Board member, corporate senior vice president and environmental director of Fujitsu Microelectronics Limited.
