The Mt. Vernon Statement is modeled on the 1960 Sharon Statement, the historic affirmation of conservative principles launched by William F. Buckley, Jr. The Mount Vernon Statement will be a reaffirmation of conservative ideals, and a uniting document for American conservatives.
Family Research Council President Tony Perkins made the following comments about this extraordinary event:
"This is a significant moment as social, fiscal, and national security conservatives come together to declare the importance of partnering to defend our nation's founding principles. The three-legged conservative coalition must remain unified behind these core beliefs to prepare for the challenges ahead and successfully confront a hostile Congress and Administration."
Joining Perkins as original signers are Heritage Foundation President Edwin Feulner, Media Research Center President Brent Bozell, Federalist Society co-founder David McIntosh, and Americans for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist among others. Former U.S. Attorney General Ed Meese will lead the group.
Perkins said the document reaffirms the conservative movement's unified commitment "to Constitutional Conservatism and the principles of the Declaration of Independence: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
