FoodInsurance.com Marks Month of September, National Preparedness Month, as Perfect Time to Make a Plan and Build a Kit
FoodInsurance.com wants to help every person with tips and tools
SALT LAKE CITY, Aug. 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- National Preparedness Month (NPM) is sponsored by FEMA's (Federal Emergency Management Agency) Ready Campaign in partnership with Citizen Corps. NPM is held each September to encourage Americans to make sure they are prepared for disasters or emergencies in their homes, businesses and communities. BeReady.org has a four-step message of which FoodInsurance.com is a big supporter: 1) Be informed. 2) Make a plan. 3) Build a kit. 4) Get involved.
With Hurricane Isaac currently making a threat to the Gulf areas and reported emergency situations occurring nationwide, it is apparent that having the right supplies on hand is incredibly important and in some cases, lifesaving. National Preparedness Month is meant to remind every American of this vital step for families and communities.
"Every household, business and school needs to take the necessary steps and have the proper supplies on hand in case of an emergency situation," says Sarah Barnes, Vice President of Marketing for FoodInsurance.com's emergency food supplies. "We support the local and national departments, such as BeReady.org, in doing what we can to spread their message. FoodInsurance.com supplies the necessary items, such as high-quality, long-term food supplies and 2-week backpack kits with all the items needed in case of an emergency. Being prepared is just simply the smart thing to do."
Disasters, natural or man-made, can force families inside for two weeks, two months, even two years. Whether forced to "shelter-in-place" or in a safer location, food and water is considered the most valuable asset. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) say having a family emergency plan in place is vital for surviving in a disaster. Their emergency checklist includes clean water: 1 gallon per person per day, portable water filter; emergency food storage: minimum 72-hours per person, but recommends 2-week supply per person. They also suggest having other emergency supplies on hand such as a first aid kit, radio (battery operated or crank), a multi-purpose utility tool and a flashlight to implement a workable family disaster plan.
"Since September is National Preparedness Month, it is a great time for people to make a plan for their households and businesses to survive and function in case of an emergency," says Mark Benthien, from the Southern California Earthquake Center. "It is great when organizations like FoodInsurance.com can help to spread the word and encourage people to make a plan. It's also important to practice your plan! A great way is to register to participate in a Great ShakeOut earthquake drill happening in states across the country this October (see www.shakeout.org). By being prepared you will increase your chances of surviving and recovering quickly after earthquakes or other disasters!"
