Firefighters Urge City of Cleveland to Accept FEMA Funds
To Do Otherwise Would Adversely Affect Safety and Service, Says Local 93 President
CLEVELAND, May 25, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The City of Cleveland has been offered the opportunity to accept $4.5 million in funding from FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) that would avert the layoff of 51 firefighters and lessen the impact of fire company closures slated for next week. The deadline for accepting these funds is close of business Thursday, May 26.
"Local 93 and the Fire Administration have been working for weeks to find a solution for the City other than the layoffs," said Local 93 President Tom Lally. "By using the grant funding and restructuring the Division, Fire Chief Stubbs submitted a deployment plan to balance the budget and maintain service without layoffs. Those were the Mayor's stated goals, but the City has yet to accept the Chief's solution."
Safety and Service in Jeopardy
The decision to not accept the FEMA grant would have lasting repercussions. The greatest impact would be on safety and service. The City recently closed four fire companies and most likely will close five more, says Lally. Accepting the Federal grant monies would help minimize these safety and service cuts. Further, by defaulting on previously awarded grants, The City of Cleveland would not be eligible to apply for additional personnel and equipment grants for years.
"Governor Kasich's cuts have forced municipalities to make some tough decisions," added Lally. "This is Mayor Jackson's chance to minimize the damage inflicted by Columbus and provide the highest level of service for the citizens of Cleveland. In our view, it isn't a difficult decision to make," says Lally.
Indeed, it could be a life or death decision, Lally adds. The Cleveland Fire Department handles all fire and rescue operations in the city as well as calls for emergency medical service. The layoffs send 51 experienced Firemedic/EMTs furlough just as increased tourism and summer sporting events bring people into the city.
"We have consistently worked with the City to maintain the highest level of service while keeping our members safe," said Lally. "Turning down this grant money could have dire consequences for residents, businesses, visitors and our members. We urge the Mayor to accept the grant money and help maintain safety and service for everyone in Cleveland."
