FEV, Inc. GT2 2-Stage Turbocharging Unit Reduces CO2
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- FEV, Inc., (FEV) a leading developer of advanced powertrain and vehicle technologies, announced today that it will show its GT2 2-Stage Turbocharging System (GT2) at the upcoming 2010 SAE World Congress, April 13 – 15 at Cobo Center in Detroit. The GT2 will be displayed in the FEV booth, #430.
The primary advantage of the GT2 is its ability to provide exceptional fuel efficiency and CO2 reduction without sacrificing power. The significant reductions in fuel consumption occur as a result of the high torque reserve at low engine speeds offered by the GT2 equipped engine. In addition to an emissions reduction of approximately 17 percent, the 2-stage system enables a significant increase in torque (370 Nm@1500 rpm in a unique, FEV designed 1.8L DI engine) compared to conventional single-stage units. The GT2 equipped engine also delivers high engine torque across a broad speed range and develops a specific power on the order of 120 kW/L.
The 2-stage turbo equipped engine is specifically designed to be coupled with a smaller engine while still offering the power of a much higher displacement engine (the baseline engine for evaluation was a 3.5L V6 North American engine). Fuel consumption is also reduced under real driving conditions, thus enabling drivers to intuitively select higher gears.
In designing the unit for use on a small engine, FEV created a completely new exhaust manifold on the 1.8L – DISI developmental engine with advanced features such as VCT and adapted charge motion. The 2-stage turbocharger equipped engine meets customer needs for a cost effective means of further reducing CO2 emissions. Borg-Warner contributed the turbocharger hardware for the project.
The two-stage charging system is currently installed in a demonstrator vehicle and undergoing over-the-road testing.
