Federal Officer Recommends Rejection of Trump Hotel's Challenges to Union Election Results

LAS VEGAS, Feb. 22, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Last week, a federal officer issued a detailed report calling for Trump International Hotel Las Vegas's objections to a recent union election of its employees be rejected.  Consequently, the report calls for the National Labor Relations Board to certify the union election, in which a majority of Trump Las Vegas employees voted in favor of unionizing.

The report is a major breakthrough in an ongoing labor dispute at Trump Hotels in Las Vegas. In December, a majority of workers at the hotel voted to be represented by the Culinary Workers Union Local 226 and the Bartenders Union Local 165 of UNITE HERE. Since that time, the company has refused to bargain with workers, instead tying up the process in a lengthy legal battle. After a three-week evidentiary hearing, a Hearing Officer for the Board found no objectionable conduct by workers or the Union that would interfere with a free and fair election.

"I recommend that the Employer's objections be overruled in their entirety," wrote Hearing Officer Lisa Dunn in her report issued February 18.

Now Trump hotel employees and the Culinary Union are redoubling their push on the hotel to negotiate with workers. The Culinary Union is calling on Mr. Trump to sit down with Trump hotel employees to begin negotiations while he's in town on Monday wooing Nevada caucus-goers. Additionally, the Culinary Union will hold a protest with hundreds of workers on Tuesday, the day of the GOP Caucus in Nevada, in front of the Trump Hotel Las Vegas.

Trump workers say they just want the same deal his company made with workers in Canada. The vote by Trump Las Vegas workers to unionize happened just one week after Trump workers in Toronto ratified their first union contract after voting to form a union that year.

"If Donald Trump wants to 'Make America Great Again,' he should start right here in Las Vegas by negotiating with us the same deal his company made with his Canadian workers," said Geoconda Arguello-Kline, Secretary-Treasurer of the Culinary Union.

Trump Las Vegas has two weeks to challenge the Hearing Officer's recommendation to the Regional Director of Region 28.
