Clear Bins at Super Bowl Central Promote Safety and Sustainability
ClearStream bins provide a clear choice for trash and recycling
CHICAGO, Jan. 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- During the week leading up to Super Bowl XLIX, downtown Phoenix will be transformed into Verizon Super Bowl Central, the epicenter of Super Bowl related events. This free, outdoor fan campus will link together twelve city blocks to create a hub of sponsor, media and NFL activities. https://azsuperbowl.com/verizon-super-bowl-central-2/
The Department of Homeland Security mandated that all containers be clear in the twelve block downtown Super Bowl Central area to help secure public safety. Working with the NFL, the City of Phoenix partnered with Pepsi to purchase 450 ClearStream bins. These clear bins will be set up in stations of three to collect trash, compostables, and recyclables. Clear bins show fans "what goes where" so they produce less trash. This is a cost-effective recycling strategy that benefits the environment.
Clear bins also give fans the opportunity to help spot a suspicious object in a ClearStream bin even from a distance. Fan vigilance helps free up law enforcement officials to focus on other threats. As former Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said about the 2013 Super Bowl, "We're asking individuals to help us. The Department of Homeland Security's 'If you See Something, Say Something' campaign is alive and well here." http://www.nola.com/superbowl/index.ssf/2013/01/super_bowl_2012_security_to_be.html
The City of Phoenix is working with Marsden, a leading facility service provider, to set up and service the trash, compost, and recycle bins. Marsden will also conduct a post sort analysis of the materials collected. The goal is to make this the greenest Super Bowl celebration in history, increasing diversion rates to over 80%.
Events at the Verizon Super Bowl Central will run from January 28-31 and culminate in Super Bowl XLIX on Sunday, February 1 at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ. (https://www.phoenix.gov/)
