eWBM Launches its Second Generation Single-Lens Depth Map Processor: DR1152
SEOUL, South Korea, Oct. 25, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- eWBM Co., Ltd., a fabless semiconductor company, announced today the successful launch of the DR1152 depth map processor. The DR1152 is the successor to the DR1151 which was the world's first system semiconductor that calculates the relative distance to an object with only a single-lens camera.
The DR1152's predecessor, DR1151 (manufactured last year), accomplished remarkable cost reduction in the depth map processor market by implementing Dual Aperture's 4-color 3D image solution technology which extracts RGB and IR signals from a single image sensor. Prior to this innovative technology, the existing market was using two sensors and an IR emitter to calculate relative distances between the sensor and an object.
The DR1152 is unique in that it does not require an IR emitter. It obtains IR and RGB information from the ambient scene in a "passive" way. This leads to a more efficient, smaller and lower cost design for depth processing applications. Another benefit to this technology is that it will work for out-door activities where an IR emitter is ineffective due to the background IR that is present.
The DR1152 increases its depth level to 121 (nearly 8 times compared to the predecessor), which is a significant enhancement to its most important feature. Unlike the predecessor, which works only with 4-color sensors, the DR1152 now supports both 4-color and 3-color image sensors. eWBM believes that the 3-color adaptation opens a new market sector since it removes the barrier of sourcing only 4-color image sensors. This will expedite time-to-market significantly since widely available image sensors can be bought off the self.
The DR1152 supports a depth image resolution of up to XGA (1024 x 768) at 30 frames per second or 60 frames per second at VGA (640 x 480) resolution. Revolutionary technologies such as blur channel depth combining, noise reduction, and edge thinning technology are included in the new product. With all these significant improvement, DR1152 contains less gate count compared to its predecessor.
Application developers can expect higher performance of the depth map generation and also end-user product miniaturization at a lower cost than using other devices in the market. eWBM expects that this device can be widely used in various applications such as mobile, gaming, and security considering its low power and low cost advantage. Target applications for the DR1152 are 3D gesture recognition, AR/VR gaming devices, automotive collision avoidance systems, single-lens laparoscope and contactless 3D fingerprint recognition. It can also be used to improve smartphone camera functions such as high precision autofocusing macro, focus changes after imaging and 3D background removal.
eWBM provides a comprehensive software development kit that allows customers to conveniently develop 3D algorithms on smart TV and many other platforms.
