MEMPHIS, Tenn., Nov. 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Evergreen Packaging today announced the company is the recipient of the 2014 American Forest & Paper Association's (AF&PA) Leadership in Sustainability Award for Sustainable Forest Management for its Certified Success – Evergreen Forest Certification Program.
"It's an honor to be the recipient of the Leadership in Sustainability Award for Sustainable Forest Management," said Evergreen Packaging President and CEO John Rooney. "This award reinforces Evergreen Packaging's commitment to promoting responsible forest management practices."
The Leadership in Sustainability Award recognizes exemplary sustainability programs and initiatives in the paper and wood products manufacturing industry. The annual awards are given based on the merit of entries received across multiple categories.
Projects that support progress toward the "Better Practices, Better Planet 2020" sustainability goals qualify for recognition in the "Leadership" category, which has five subcategories that correspond to the goals: Sustainable Forest Management, Paper Recovery for Recycling, Energy Efficiency/Greenhouse Gas Reduction, Safety, and Water.
Evergreen Packaging was selected for its development of the Evergreen Forest Certification, a group certification program that allows multiple landowners to be certified under a single group certificate – a cost-effective way for landowners to have their forests certified to internationally recognized standards. In its first year, the program grew to include nearly 60 landowners comprising approximately 40,000 acres in North and South Carolina.
