Even Minor Driving Infractions Cause Much Higher Car Insurance Bills
Minor Speeding Violations Cause Premiums to Rise by 21%
SAN FRANCISCO, March 27, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- While serious violations such as driving under the influence and reckless driving understandably lead to much higher car insurance costs, lesser infractions dent consumers' finances as well, according to a new insuranceQuotes.com report. For example, drivers who commit a minor speeding violation (1-15 MPH over the legal limit) pay an average of 21% more for car insurance as a result.
Other fairly minor transgressions that carry significant penalties include following too closely (+19%), not signaling (+19%) and improperly using a car pool lane (+18%). The most expensive violations are DUIs (+93%) and reckless driving (+82%). The least expensive is a seat belt violation (+5%).

"Drivers who commit moving violations can take safety classes to improve their skills and remove blemishes from their records," said Laura Adams, senior analyst at insuranceQuotes.com. "Many of these courses are offered online and can be completed in just a few hours. Otherwise, these infractions can lead to higher car insurance costs for up to three years."

insuranceQuotes.com and Quadrant Information Services calculated the impacts of 17 common moving violations in all 50 states (and Washington, D.C.) using data from the largest carriers (representing 60-70% of market share) in each state/district.
Averages are based on a 45-year-old married, employed female with a clean driving record driving a 2012 sedan. The hypothetical driver has a bachelor's degree, an excellent credit score, no lapses in coverage and the following limits: $100,000 (bodily injury), $300,000 (property damage), $100,000 (UI/UIM), $10,000 (PIP) and a $500 deductible.
