Growing Popularity of the Outsourcing Model Fuels Growth of Retail Colocation and Managed Hosting
The need to reduce IT costs and develop increased efficiency in IT management is causing European organisations to turn towards IT outsourcing models. Data centre services consisting of the retail colocation and managed hosting segments are increasingly being adopted by organisations to benefit from cost efficiencies and to focus internal IT resources on innovative projects. This research service leverages secondary and primary research to analyse the size of the total market in Europe and weighs the effects of drivers and restraints to forecast the growth of the retail colocation and managed hosting segments in the region. Using 2012 as the base year, this study forecasts for the years 2013–2018.
Executive Summary
Frost & Sullivan's research on the European data centre services market has estimated the total market size at $X billion for 2012. In this research, the data centre services market is defined as the sum of the retail colocation and managed hosting segments. The total market is expected to accelerate at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of X% (2012–2018).
The need to reduce capital expenditure and capitalise on efficient data centre management is expected to drive the growth of the retail colocation segment. The managed hosting segment will grow due to the increasing need to focus internal resources on innovative IT tasks and capitalise on more economical IT management services offered by managed hosting providers.
Western European countries are the largest market for data centre services in Europe. While some Southern European markets are growing sluggishly because of the economic crises, Eastern European countries are high-growth regions for retail colocation and managed hosting providers.
While both segments are populated by different types of providers, such as carrier-neutral providers, telecommunication providers, system integrators, and hosting providers, the managed hosting market is a very fragmented market with numerous small and regional providers.
Using both secondary and primary research, this research examines the total European market, analysing the competitive landscape of the retail colocation and managed hosting segments. It also discusses the geographical trends in Europe, forecasting growth for France, Germany, Spain, Benelux, the United Kingdom, and the Rest of Europe.
CEO's Perspective
1. The United Kingdom, Germany, France, and BENELUX are the largest markets in Europe for retail colocation and managed hosting.
2. Cultural and language barriers in Europe necessitate the development of region-specific strategies.
3. Increasing the supply of data centres, especially in the UK, is driving down the price for retail colocation services.
4. The growth of cloud services is expected to reduce demand for retail colocation and managed hosting.
5. There is an increasing demand for hybrid data centre services combining cloud, colocation, and managed hosting.
Market Overview—Definitions
Data centre services refers to the provision of offsite data centre facilities which consist of IT infrastructure components such as racks, servers, and power and network connections. Depending on the requirements of the customer, this includes making available the various infrastructure components for self management by the customer or the provision of managed infrastructure services. This report has assessed the data centre market as the sum of 2 main segments. These are:
• Colocation Services: Retail Colocation
• Managed Hosting Services
Colocation Service
Colocation refers to the provision of data centre space, racks, power, and network resources for use by the customer. Colocation is commonly understood to have 2 main types. One refers to wholesale colocation service, which includes the provision of large data centre spaces for customers with high power requirements. Typically, this would involve the provision of an entire data centre to a customer who can choose to design and customise the space as required. Some of the major providers of wholesale colocation are Global Switch Ltd, Digital Realty Trust, and DuPont Fabros Technology Inc.
The other is the provision of retail colocation, which includes offering smaller spaces fitted with cages or racks with lower power resources per customer, so that multiple customers can host their IT infrastructure within a data centre. Customers generally reserve racks, power, and network resources but bring their own servers to the data centre. Retail colocation is also accompanied by the provision of value-added services such as security services and 24/7 IT support services.
This report excludes wholesale colocation services and includes only the retail colocation portions of the market.
Managed Hosting Service
Managed hosting refers to the management of servers, operating systems, and network resources for customers. Managed hosting services can be offered using dedicated servers (servers dedicated to a customer) or on dedicated, virtualised servers (dedicated servers running virtualisation software).
Market Overview—Value Chain for Data Centre Services
Infrastructure Provider
Purchasing or renting space, racks, cages, generators, and biometric security is central to the operation of a data centre. Data centres are either constructed or rented from wholesale operators that offer long-term contracts for data centre space.
Smaller managed hosting providers often host servers on data centre spaces rented from retail colocation providers.
Network Providers
The network is critical to transfer workloads between customers' global data centres.
Data centre service providers either partner with multiple carriers to offer a choice of networks or work with a single provider to offer services.
Technology Provider
Data centre service providers work with several technology providers (hardware- (servers and software- (virtualisation).
As customers increasingly look to utilise cloud platforms for processing workloads, data centre service providers partner with leading platforms, such as Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure.
Energy Provider
Data centre service providers partner with energy providers in the region that ensure an intermittent supply of energy to the data centre during the contract period.
With increasing importance for energy efficiency, data centre providers also benefit from partnering with clean energy providers.
Market Overview—Regional Definition
This report analyses the data centre services market in Europe. This will include a specific assessment of the demand and the supply in the colocation and managed hosting markets in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Benelux, Spain, and the Rest of Europe.
The Rest of Europe consists of Ireland, the Nordic countries, Southern European countries, such as Italy and Portugal, and Central and Eastern European countries, such as Switzerland, Poland, Romania, Hungary, and Slovakia.
