Europe History Maps Made Simple with Euratlas Periodis Expert
Periodis Expert - a historical atlas and database - allows to explore the history of Europe through 2000 years and to customize historical maps.
YVERDON-LES-BAINS, Switzerland, March 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Periodis Expert, a new vector history atlas, makes it easy to fly over the states of Europe as they were at the end of each century. Users can zoom in and out, display or hide towns, countries, rivers or mountains, go forward or back in time, focus on an area or search a specific place.
"History is not an exact science, hence users may change or move the names of states and cities or add pins at important places," says Euratlas cartographer. He adds "Historical mapping is useful in the humanities, fine arts, or politics. However the more detailed a map is, the less objective it appears. We solved this issue by drawing black-box maps. Leaving aside dense events lists and complex explanation, we show global maps of this continent in their process of unification, at fixed intervals, that is in year 2000, 1900, 1800 and so on, to year 1 AD."
Users discover accurate colourful maps and have the choice to fix attention on their region, while having the possibility to explore the rest of Europe at the same period.
For the creation of this atlas, information was gathered from various primary sources and references, mainly historical atlases from almost all European countries, and compiled in a georeferenced database - the Euratlas Georeferenced Historical Vector Data - for consistency.
The georeferencing and the Periodis software were created by Marc-Antoine Nussli M.Sc. in Computer Science and PhD student. The maps were drawn by Christos Nussli LL.M. and cartographer. The German version was established by Thomas Hockmann Geographer and the French version by Oskar Baffi LL.M and Research Fellow at the International Centre for Geopolitical Studies.
Euratlas Periodis Expert is available in English, French or German. Download the demo version now.
