HOUSTON, July 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- ESG is pleased to announce the recent expansion of its microseismic hydraulic fracture mapping services to include downhole acquisition services. This service offering comes after ESG's purchase of wireline acquisition vehicles and downhole tools to help support monitoring operations in the US hydraulic fracture market.

"ESG's return to wireline acquisition is a logical step for us" says Ted Urbancic, EVP of Global Energy Services for ESG. "From 2000-2003, ESG provided full acquisition and processing services for hydraulic fracture monitoring, however since then we have focused on developing our advanced microseismic processing and analysis capabilities. Providing wireline data acquisition means that we can better serve our clients by offering a full monitoring solution." ESG already provides instrumentation for permanent downhole and near-surface life-of-field reservoir monitoring.
Expansion into wireline acquisition also gives ESG more control over the placement of downhole geophone arrays, ensuring higher quality data and optimal client benefit from the monitoring program. ESG designs all monitoring array configurations specific to each site. "Each project is different so you cannot expect to be able to apply a standard monitoring configuration" says Urbancic.
ESG successfully launched its wireline monitoring services for a recent horizontal hydraulic fracture operation in the southern US. Providing around-the-clock microseismic monitoring from three vertical observation wells throughout the 10-stage fracture program, ESG provided the clients with real-time microseismic results. The multi-array data also provided an opportunity to perform advanced Seismic Moment Tensor Inversion (SMTI) analysis, which identifies the failure mechanisms associated with fracture propagation. When combined with the injection data, trends in microseismic data in terms of principal stress detection were determined. "This integrated geophysical and geological approach is necessary to provide operators with valuable insight into fracture effectiveness and help characterize stimulated volumes and surfaces for the shale plays" says Urbancic.
