There are approximately X local IT companies offering some kind of EMR implementation for healthcare institutions in Brazil. However, our research and considerations follow the Brazilian Federal Council of Medicine definition of an EMR as: "an unique document compounding a set of informations, signals, and registered images, generated from facts, events, and situations regarding patient health and any provided assistance."

In 2010, the CFM and Sbis started to provide a standard control program for EMR solutions in order to certify the solutions that best met their requirements. This certification, despite not being compulsory for EMR providers, is best known as a first criteria for the most reliable and competitive local systems. Frost & Sullivan research, therefore, has mainly considered the X Sbis/CFM certified companies in this study.

As the Brazilian HC IT market is in a developing stage, wherein norms for HC IT interoperability are nonexistent, EMR solutions are mainly sold as a part, or module, of an HIS solution. In Brazil, X% of healthcare institutions purchase management solutions bundled from the same vendor (i.e., ERP, HIS, and EMR in the same solution).
