Eastern Illinois University Student Crushes Scissors With a Rock to Win $25,000 at the 2010 USA Rock Paper Scissors League College Championships Sponsored by AMP Energy at MTV's Spring Break
Brittany "BK" Kraft wins $25,000 towards her tuition and becomes the 2nd college champion in the history of the sport
ACAPULCO, Mexico, March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- March means two things for many college students -- MTV Spring Break and the USA Rock Paper Scissors League College Championships, sponsored by AMP Energy. The national tournament was held at MTV Spring Break in Acapulco, Mexico as 78 students representing almost every college conference gave sweaty palms a whole new meaning. In an ultimate nail-biting championship battle, Brittany "BK" Kraft defeated Andrew "The Equation" Richard by crushing his scissors with her rock and capturing the prestigious national title. The action from the winning duel premiered yesterday on mtvU and can be seen online at mtvU.com.
Fists flew with various strategies as contestants battled it out in the single-elimination, bracket-style tournament. Kraft earned bragging rights for Eastern Illinois University plus $25,000 towards her college tuition. In addition, she will receive one year's supply of AMP Energy Drink, AMP Energy Juice and AMP Energy Gum for her win.
"I came to Spring Break to have some fun and I'm going home with $25,000 to help pay off my student loans," said Kraft. "I think it's fair to say that I'm pretty AMP'd up."
In 2009, AMP Energy became the official sponsor of the USA Rock Paper Scissors League College Championships, offering students the opportunity to represent their schools and showcase their talent. Jonathan "Naco" Monaco of Syracuse University won the 2009 USA Rock Paper Scissors League College Championships, sponsored by AMP Energy, and $20,000.
"When it matters most and you need to put forth your best performance, AMP Energy is at your side," said Jeff Filiberto, Senior Brand Manager, AMP Energy. "All 78 competitors hit the beach ready for a good duel. In the end, 'BK' was able to advance through the brackets by throwing her now infamous rock. She was a crowd-pleaser, and did not disappoint."
Rock Paper Scissors, the popular two-person hand game, is most commonly played to settle friendly disputes. In 2005, the USARPS League was formed by Commissioner Matti Leshem as the governing body of the sport in the U.S. The League brought rules and structure to Rock Paper Scissors matches and continues to celebrate a game that has been played for centuries by people around the world. In USARPS leagues a match is determined by the best of three "bouts." Each "bout" consists of three engagements in which each player chooses rock, paper, or scissors.
"This national tournament is a great way to help students pay for their education. They got into college using their brains and they can pay for it by using their fists," said Matti Leshem, USARPS League Commissioner. "We are thrilled to partner with AMP Energy and excited to crown Brittany as our first ever female Rock Paper Scissors League College champion."
