East Tennessee Health Information Network Selects DataMotion Direct Secure Messaging for Exchange of Patient Health Information
DataMotion Direct Facilitates Rapid Adoption of Direct Project Guidelines, Gives Providers in Tennessee Access to Financial Incentives, Enables Seamless and Secure Electronic Communication Across the East Tennessee Healthcare Ecosystem
MORRISTOWN, N.J., Aug. 13, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- DataMotion (www.datamotion.com), an innovative health information service provider (HISP) with more than 14 years of experience in secure data delivery, today announced that East Tennessee Health Information Network (etHIN) has selected its DataMotion Direct secure messaging service. etHIN is adding DataMotion Direct to its suite of product offerings as a service that enables secure provider-to-provider exchange of electronic healthcare information (EHI) among its community of physicians, clinics, diagnostic centers, hospitals and other point-of-care facilities. This capability drives waste out of the healthcare system by replacing paper and fax-based information exchange workflows with electronic ones – resulting in the potential for improved patient care and outcomes through faster and better access to patient information.

etHIN (www.ethin.org) is a non-profit, regional Health Information Organization (HIO) offering a suite of innovative technology services, enabling its participants to quickly and easily access and exchange patient information for enhanced medical decision making. etHIN facilitates the electronic exchange of health information in a primary Community of Care covering a 17-county area of middle East Tennessee. Within that region, etHIN's information exchange services target the support of more than 1.2 million patients, 2,500 physicians and 4,500 hospital beds, as well as 11 hospital systems. Growing daily, etHIN currently provides services for 10 hospitals in the Knoxville metro area and is exchanging authorized data with several of the largest physician's groups in the region.
With the DataMotion Direct secure messaging service, etHIN joins the ranks of HIOs working to make the vision of the Direct Project a reality. Overseen by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, the Direct Project is a federal healthcare initiative fostering a standard secure messaging method to exchange EHI. It is aimed at ensuring compliance with federal privacy requirements while working toward improved patient outcomes. etHIN will offer DataMotion's Direct messaging technology across its Community of Care, equipping participants with a simple, effective way to securely exchange EHI.
"The healthcare industry is working diligently towards major transformational efficiencies by moving from traditional, labor intensive fax or paper-based processes to automated electronic ones," said etHIN Executive Director Leigh Sterling. " Information sharing is a key factor to improving patient care, and the addition of DataMotion Direct to our current HIE (health information exchange) technology toolkit will help us facilitate yet another cost effective method of information exchange within our strongly committed Community of Care."
DataMotion has been a leader in Direct secure messaging since entering the healthcare scene in October 2012; expanding its company focus to begin operations as a HISP and launching its DataMotion Direct service. The company's work with etHIN is a major advancement in moving the Direct Project forward and fulfilling the vision of DirectTrust, an independent non-profit trade association tasked with overcoming secure data transfer challenges related to the Direct Project.
"The DirectTrust Network offers secure and interoperable exchange of Direct emails and messages between all subscribers of accredited HISPs," said David C. Kibbe, MD, MBA, President and CEO of DirectTrust. "etHIN and DataMotion represent an important onboarding initiative for citizens of Tennessee, who will benefit from DataMotion's inclusion in the DirectTrust community by being able to exchange Direct messages and attachments across an expanding national network of accredited HISPs and their subscribers."
"Complexity is far and away the greatest barrier to Direct Project adoption," said Bob Bales, CEO of DataMotion. "History shows us that if a secure messaging solution is too difficult to use, members of the healthcare team will retreat to insecure workarounds that put patient data at risk and defeat the productivity gains promised by electronic communications. DataMotion Direct makes secure messaging completely transparent to end users, promoting widespread adoption and clearing the way for successful Direct Project deployments."
Providers based in Tennessee, including etHIN's coverage area, are eligible for a one-time reimbursement when implementing Direct secure messaging through a $500 incentive payment from the State of Tennessee's Office of E-Health Initiatives. After implementing Direct, providers can apply for the financial incentive by visiting the State initiative's website at www.healthesharetn.com.
