E-Commerce in Brazil Registered R$ 18.6 Billion in Sales in the First Half of 2015, According to WebShoppers
SAO PAULO, Sept. 16, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- E-bit/Buscape (www.ebit.com.br), unit of Buscape Company specialized in e-commerce information, has disclosed the results of the 32nd edition of the WebShoppers report, the most thorough report in the sector that x-rays e-commerce in Brazil. According to the study, the sector made R$ 19.6 billion in the first half of 2015, a nominal growth of 16% compared to the same period in 2014, when R$ 16.1 billion in sales were registered.
The major driver of these results was average ticket, 13% higher than in the first half of 2014, reaching an average amount of R$ 377, justifying both the prices in the sector and the higher sales volume in categories such as Household Appliances and Telephony/Mobile phones. A total of 17.6 million people performed at least one purchase on Brazilian online stores, accounting for 49.4 million orders over this period, which represents a 7% fall in the volume of purchasers, which might have been boosted by light users, people who usually perform at least one order through Internet over a six-month period, but who didn't buy anything this time.
Categories with the highest sales and billing
Fashion & Accessories, despite having shown a fall in relation to the first six months in 2014, is still the leader in sales by category, with 15% of the order volume; followed close behind by Household Appliances, 13%; Telephony/Mobile phones, 11%; Cosmetics & Perfumery/Health, 11%; and Subscriptions & Magazines/Books, 9%.
Use of mobile devices for online purchases
For this edition, E-bit/Buscape carried out an exclusive survey, with 2,204 Internet users, in June, 2015, to assess some behavioral aspects regarding the use of mobile devices in online purchases. The study points out that 83% of respondents have at least one mobile device and home wifi connection (via smartphone or tablet) is the most common access to the Internet for 84% of participants; followed by wifi at work, 39%, and by operators, 36% post-paid and 32% pre-paid.
According to the Executive Director of E-bit/Buscape, Andre Ricardo Dias, "online consumers' computer hours shall certainly be impacted more and more consistently by mobile devices; after all, consumers have smartphones in their hands nearly 100% of the time, and this perception works to lure retail companies to invest in the development of responsive websites".
Projection for 2015
For the accumulated value in 2015, E-bit/Buscape predicts that e-commerce shall reach R$ 41.2 billion in sales, 15% higher than last year. A 5% increase in total orders is also estimated for the second half of the year, reaching a total of 108.2 millions by the end of the year.
