Duke Energy Announces Academic Scholars for 2010

CHARLOTTE, N.C., May 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Duke Energy (NYSE: DUK) announced today that 20 children of company employees have been selected to receive 2010 Duke Energy Foundation scholarships.

Fifteen recipients will receive up to $5,000 per year for up to four consecutive years of undergraduate study at an accredited college or university in the United States or Canada. Five students were named alternates and will receive a one-time $1,000 scholarship.

Scholarship recipients must be graduating high school/secondary school seniors and are chosen annually by an independent committee of judges. The committee reviews and selects applicants based on their performance in academics, leadership, participation in school and community activities, honors and awards, work experience and financial need.

Jessica Amos of Lawsonville, N.C. – a student at North Stokes High School in Danbury, she is the daughter of Kent Amos.

Austin Backus of Cincinnati, Ohio – a student at Glen Este High School in Cincinnati, he is the son of David Backus.  

Sarah Barfield of Pickens, S.C. – a student at D.W. Daniel High School in Central, she is the daughter of Ralph Barfield.  

Trenton Brock of Inman, S.C. – a student at Chapman High School in Inman, he is the son of Lee Brock.

Tyler Brooks of Clover, S.C. – a student at Gaston Day School in Gastonia, he is the son of Mark Brooks.

Samuel Burchfield of Seneca, S.C. – a student at Seneca High School, he is the son of Jack Burchfield.

Jamie Claeys of Greenwood, Ind. – a student at Center Grove High School in Greenwood, she is the daughter of Mark Claeys.

Sarah Djali of Charlotte, N.C. – a student at First Assembly Christian School in Concord, she is the daughter of Reza Djali.

Megan Gray of Mooresville, N.C. – a student at Lake Norman Senior High School in Mooresville, she is the daughter of David Gray.  

Kathryn Kingsmore of Charlotte, N.C. – a student at South Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, she is the daughter of Robert Kingsmore.

Kelby Lomax of Thomasville, N.C. – a student at East Davidson High School in Thomasville, she is the daughter of Angie Lomax.

Jonathan Ray of Belmont, N.C. – a student at South Point High School in Belmont, he is the son of John Ray.

Joel Shuford of Jamestown, N.C. – a student at Southwest Guilford High School in High Point, he is the son of Tim Shuford.  

Audrey Welkin of Noblesville, Ind., – a student at Noblesville High School, she is the daughter of Dan Welkin.

Nicholas White of Matthews, N.C. – a student at Charlotte Catholic High School in Charlotte, he is the son of Robert White.
