Comparing CO2 laser resurfacing to a "very precise, targeted chemical peel," Dr. Pane said regardless of which procedure a patient chooses, it is extremely important to avoid exposure to direct sunlight during the recovery period.

"Sunlight can make the skin more tender and prone to sunburn, aggravating the very problems the laser was intended to correct because the thin layer of dead skin that protects the facial area is now stripped away," he said.
