The Decision Sciences Institute Annual Meeting took place from November 22-25, 2014 in Tampa Fla. This year's theme was "Technology and the Rapidly Changing Global Business Landscape: How the heightened pace of technological innovation is driving change in business and business educational paradigms." The 45th Annual Meeting was attended by international decision support specialists across all major verticals including healthcare, technology, law, business, government and operational development.
The Healthcare Colloquium uses a continuum of care model in its approach to healthcare and its hospital member organizations work within four established domains: Community, Hospital, Clinicians and Science. Dr. Joseph challenged DSI attendees to approach healthcare decision-making in a similar manner. Chronic disease, like heart failure, provides a fertile ground for predictive analytics to make a difference in the 20+ years before its true diagnosis. Dr. Joseph illustrated how The Healthcare Colloquium, coupled with the Battelle Memorial Institute, is bringing predictive analytics into healthcare in the form of disruptive innovative solutions like quality improvement analytics and clinical predictive analytics tools that hospitals and health systems can leverage to significantly impact the bottom line as well as saving patient lives.
"Dr. Joseph provided a compelling and passionate call for action for the decision science community and encouraged them to bring their integrative knowledge and action-oriented research skills to designing the health care system of the future," says Moderator Vicki Smith-Daniels, Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management, The Indiana University Kelley School of Business. "Early adopters of innovative, patient-centered care coordination models, such as the Healthcare Colloquium's heart failure program, are well-positioned to become leaders in transforming health care and achieving better outcomes, better care, and lower total costs."
Dr. Joseph received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Ohio State University in 1977. Completing his residency at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, he began fulltime practice in the hospital's emergency department, becoming Emergency Department Chair in 1989 while serving as a senior active staff physician from 1986 to 2000. Dr. Joseph served on the national steering committee for the Healthcare Quality Improvement Program (former HCFA) that developed the Cooperative Cardiovascular Project, was a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians Patient Safety Task Force, the American Heart Association ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction System of Care Committee as well as the writing committee for the Heart Attack Safety Act of 2005 introduced into the US Senate. The Healthcare Colloquium, founded by Dr. Joseph in 2008, was acquired by Battelle Memorial Institute in 2014.
