Extract from this report
• The introduction of the Reimbursement Act has brought significant drops in the segment of reimbursed medicines in 2012, felt by all the elements of the distribution chain (producers, wholesalers, pharmacies and the patient).
• In 2012 the pharmacy market in Poland observed the first negative growth change in years, and dropped 6% year on year to PLN 26.5bn. This was mainly due to the introduction of the Reimbursement Act – the main reason for the decreased sales in the segment of reimbursed drugs in 2012 by as much as 23%. The segment of full-price prescription drugs expanded by 13% year on year, and sales of OTC products – by 6%.
• According to a study realised by PMR in 2011 Poles are relatively conservative in their consumer behaviour. Younger consumers are more likely to buy OTC medicines and supplements also outside of pharmacies (46% of users aged 18-34 buy only in pharmacies, compared to 82% of people aged 55 or more), primarily in hypermarkets, local shops located on housing estates, and health and beauty stores.
