Detroit People Mover Runs Extended Service for Big Sports Weekend
DETROIT, April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- April in downtown Detroit is always exciting, but this week is a virtual "Sports Staycation" for fans of all types -- and the Detroit People Mover (DPM) is ready to transport you to the fun, with longer hours, special deals and quick service. Here is an event itinerary to help visitors navigate:
Wednesday, April 7 - Exit at the Joe Louis Arena Station on for the Wings' final, regular season game at 7:30 p.m. Thousands of ticket-holders use the People Mover to soak in the pre-game revelry at their favorite spot, with this being no exception. NHL Playoffs begin on April 14, with the Wings in contention and many more great games ahead at the Joe.
Thursday, April 8 - Park once and ride the People Mover from the free College Hockey Fan Festival at the GM Wintergarden (Renaissance Center Station), then over to Broadway Station and a quick walk to the national semi-final games at Ford Field. People Mover stations are also steps from several of the official fan gathering restaurants (Grand Circus Park Station - Angelina Italian Bistro, Bookies Bar & Grille, Hockeytown Cafe / Broadway Station - Detroit Beer Company) and will operate extended service until 2 a.m.
TRAVELER'S TIP: Pick up a DPM Unlimited Ride Fan Pass. For $5, travel in comfort, with camaraderie and team spirit for three days, from Thursday through Saturday. Passes are available at 1420 Washington Blvd. from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.
Friday, April 9 - It's been said that Opening Day is a holiday in the D, with many of the local establishments starting business as early as 8 a.m. Parking is plentiful and DPM trains arrive approximately every three minutes, whether coming or going. After the Tigers game, cross the street for the Friday Night event at Ford Field until 10 p.m. or ride over to the Fan Fest (until 8 p.m.). DPM service is on its regular Friday schedule until 2 a.m.
Saturday, April 10 - So many choices, lots of time. The Tigers play in the early afternoon (Grand Circus Park Station); Fan Fest is going on strong (10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Renaissance Center Station); doors open for the Championship Game at 5 p.m. (Broadway Station) and Daughtry revs up at 7:30 p.m. (Joe Louis Arena Station). The DPM closes at 3 a.m.
Sunday, April 11 - Still going? Grab a light brunch and see the Tigers take on the Indians at Comerica Park. DPM returns to normal hours with service until midnight. It's good to be home.
The Grand Circus Park Station is stairway-accessible only. Patrons requiring elevators or escalators in that general area may board or depart at either the Broadway or Times Square stations. The remaining 12 stations are fully handicap-accessible. Riders pay just 50 cents each for this scenic view of downtown Detroit. Children age five and under ride free.
