"The recession continues to affect Delaware's manufacturing industries, particularly its transportation equipment sector and industries reliant on the housing market," says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912.
The transportation equipment sector saw one of the worst drops in employment over the year, down 67%, due partially to the closure of GM's assembly plant in Wilmington.
MNI reports Delaware's top industrial sector remains chemicals manufacturing, accounting for 11,176 of the state's jobs, down 9.1% over the year, following layoffs at specialty chemical maker Ashland, Inc, among others. Second-ranked food products accounts for 9,011 jobs, with no significant change reported, while instruments and related products represents 2,511 of the state's manufacturing jobs, virtually unchanged from a year ago.
Losses were seen in most of Delaware's industrial sectors and included lumber/wood, down 21.2%; furniture/fixtures down 20.1%; textiles/apparel down 19.4%; stone/clay/glass down 17.2%; electronics down 11.1%; fabricated metals down 10.9% and paper products down 10.9%.
Bright spots for the state include the opening of laboratory instrument maker, Testing Machines, Inc., which will move its manufacturing operations to New Castle from Long Island; the opening of a Fisker automotive plant at the previously idled Boxwood facility, which will develop and build hybrid vehicles; the expansion of ILC Dover, which plans to hire 70 by the end of July in order to fill a new Department of Defense contract; and the expansion of salt products manufacturer Magco Incorporated in Wilmington.
According to MNI, Wilmington remains the state's top city for manufacturing employment, home to 11,303 jobs, down 17.8% over the year. Second-ranked Newark accounts for 5,466 jobs, with employment down 6.8% over the past twelve months. New Castle is home to 3,442 industrial jobs, down 3% over the year. Georgetown accounts for 2,563 jobs, down 6.7%, while Milford is home to 2,263, down 5.7%.
