Deadline to Apply for Civilian Absentee Ballot is May 11
HARRISBURG, Pa., May 4 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania voters who expect to be unable to go to the polls on May 18 must submit applications for absentee ballots to their county board of elections no later than 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 11, Secretary of the Commonwealth Pedro A. Cortes said today.
Some exceptions to the May 11 deadline apply to military, overseas and emergency absentee voters. More information about the deadlines for these absentee voters is available online at VotesPA.com.
"The freedom to vote is the foundation of our nation, and I encourage Pennsylvanians who will be away from home to exercise their right to vote in the May 18 primary election," Cortes said. "Absentee balloting affords Pennsylvanians who are physically unable to go to the polls the opportunity to vote."
The "Application for Absentee Ballot" form can be downloaded through the "Applications and Forms" section of the department's website at VotesPA.com. In addition to basic voter registration information, the applicant will be asked to specify a reason for applying to vote absentee.
Traditionally, active, deployed members of the military, Pennsylvania students attending out-of-state colleges or universities, individuals out of their municipality on business and individuals with illnesses or disabilities vote via absentee ballot. A complete list of eligible reasons for using an absentee ballot is available at the website.
A registered absentee voter can designate someone else who can deliver his or her absentee application and ballot if the voter is physically unable to do so. "Certification of Designated Agent" forms are also available online.
Most absentee ballots must be received by the voter's county board of elections by 5 p.m. on Friday, May 14, either in person or by mail. Check the VotesPA.com website for exceptions for military and overseas ballots and emergency absentee ballots.
