"CURE's Illustrated Guide to Cancer presents a unique opportunity for us to showcase our highly-acclaimed medical illustrations as a teaching tool," said Lena Huang, managing editor of CURE's recently launched book division. "It represents an opportunity to explore cancer in a visual context and to help health care providers better explain cancer—from diagnosis to treatment—to their patients."
Since CURE's inception in 2002, the magazine has received a steady outpouring of accolades from professionals who regularly use the medical illustrations that can be found in each quarterly issue as a teaching tool for their patients.
"When we are on the road at conferences, we have nurses stop by just to let us know that they still use medical illustrations that we published years ago – some of the nurses have even created their own binder of illustrations that they have self-laminated and made copies of to hand to patients," said Susan McClure, publisher of CURE. "This ongoing input really inspired our staff to conceptualize the idea of taking the magazine's best illustrations and compiling them into a book for nurses, social workers, and patient navigators."
Beginning in June, CURE's Illustrated Guide to Cancer will be offered to health care providers across the country as part of an initiative supported by Genentech BioOncology. This 80-page, hard-cover book features 46 informative and easy-to-understand illustrations broken down into six chapters: about cancer, cancer staging, causes and risks, symptoms and diagnosis, treatments, and side effects. Each copy of the book comes with a CD-ROM insert that allows professionals to print out specific illustrations and make notes to help patients understand their individual diagnosis.
Led by Editor-in-Chief, Debu Tripathy, MD, CURE's Illustrated Guide to Cancer is the third book to be published by Dallas-based CURE Media Group.
"We are so lucky to have an expert team of medical writers and illustrators to call on for these complicated projects where we take highly scientific medical information and translate it into a language that patients understand," said Dr. Tripathy. "This is yet another way CURE is able to step up and help health care professionals assist their patients in truly understanding their cancer diagnosis and becoming an active participant in their care."
