FLORHAM PARK, N.J., July 7, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- DataMotion, an innovative health information service provider (HISP) with more than 15 years of secure messaging experience, today announced Cumberland Medical Center has deployed DataMotion's Direct Secure Messaging with Cumberland's MEDITECH electronic health record (EHR) system. As a result, Cumberland successfully gained attestation for Meaningful Use Stage 2 (MU2), and can now communicate health records privately and securely with patients and collaborating medical providers.
Cumberland Medical Center, located in Crossville, Tennessee, is a 189-bed regional hospital and a member of Covenant Health, East Tennessee's leading healthcare provider network. The hospital supports more than 800 employees and uses the MEDITECH 6.0 platform as its EHR system. It is also an active participant in the East Tennessee Health Information Network (etHIN), a community health information exchange. DataMotion is also the HISP providing Direct addresses for etHIN.
In order to receive incentive payments under MU2 requirements from the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services, Cumberland made the decision to attest starting April 1st. With its MU2-compatible EHR deployed and updates to the software received just two weeks prior to attestation, Cumberland had a very short timeframe to integrate Direct with its MEDITECH EHR system. Integration of Direct was needed in order to utilize MEDITECH's reporting tools, and to automate the process of creating and sending transition of care documents to referral partners, as required by MU2. Automating the process is expected to improve the quality of care patients received after discharge.
Cumberland quickly began looking for a HISP to integrate Direct with its MEDITECH EHR, choosing DataMotion for several reasons including: its role as the HISP providing Direct addresses to etHIN, its ability to use the hospital's existing Direct addresses, and its ability to quickly integrate with the existing MEDITECH EHR system.
"With DataMotion, we were quickly able to automate the transition of care process within the two weeks prior to the April reporting period," said Darrel Whitmill, RN, physician informatics/Meaningful Use manager, Cumberland Medical Center. "Working with DataMotion, etHIN and MEDITECH, we started the reporting process for attestation on schedule, April 1st, and already have been able to provide a better quality of care experience for our discharged patients."
DataMotion is fully accredited by the Direct Trusted Agent Accreditation Program (DTAAP) for HISPs from DirectTrust.org and the Electronic Healthcare Network Accreditation Commission (EHNAC). It also is a Trusted Participant in the DirectTrust Accredited Trust Bundle.
DataMotion was founded in 1999, and today, millions of desktop, tablet and mobile users leverage its proven, cloud-based data delivery platform to securely transmit protected health information (PHI). In the fall of 2012, the company expanded operations as a HISP and introduced DataMotion Direct. This breakthrough secure messaging service offers easy-to-use data transfer capabilities for "real-world" healthcare communications including secure email for sending and receiving PHI, summary of care documents and large images for both in and out-of-network communications. It also allows organizations to quickly integrate with the Direct Project, comply with MU2 and qualify for subsidies from the ONC. As a result, DataMotion Direct has grown rapidly and now serves organizations across the healthcare spectrum, including healthcare providers, EHR, HIE and interface engine vendors.
"Exchanging information is paramount to providing the highest levels of patient care and the healthcare industry is undergoing a major transformation in sharing information electronically," said Bob Bales, CEO of DataMotion. "With DataMotion Direct seamlessly integrated with MEDITECH, Cumberland Medical Center was quickly able to communicate sensitive patient information securely and easily, with not only medical peers but patients as well."
