Local forensic company works to help students stay in school
LARGO, Fla., Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Nearly 20 students from the Pinellas PACE Center for Girls will get the chance to be Crime Scene Investigators (CSI) for a day.
Forensic Technology, a Largo company, is using its expertise in forensics to help high school science students learn more about how forensic investigators solve crimes and, at the same time, help promote the benefits of staying in school.
Because the drop-out rate is a state-wide problem, Forensic Technology has partnered with an "at risk" school in the community to stage CSI for a Day. The event consists of a fictional homicide investigation in which students become the CSIs tasked with solving the case. Students have the opportunity to understand and analyze evidence in a lab-like setting, interview suspects, and, of course, solve a murder.
When: Friday, September 24, 2010 from 10 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Where: Star Center, 7887 Bryan Dairy Rd # 120, Largo, FL 33777

"Our business has led us to cities around the world where we have seen the tragic personal and economic suffering resulting from crime and violence," said Robert A. Walsh, President of Forensic Technology. "We need to do our part and give back to our community. Encouraging our students to learn and pursue an education not only benefits our community, but our society", he added.
Working in tandem with PACE Center science teachers and managed entirely by employee volunteers, CSI for a Day takes place in an atmosphere of learning, collaboration, team building, and spirited competition. For their crime-solving abilities, the members of the winning team will be awarded prizes they can use to practice their new forensic science skills. Forensic Technology will also present the school with a check to be used for the purchase of science equipment.
Each week, TV dramas -- such as "CSI" -- depict the many tools and processes available to CSIs and police to help bring criminals to justice. In fact, Forensic Technology's products are regularly featured on "CSI", helping the TV CSIs and detectives link crimes, guns, and suspects.
