CRC Cancels Planned Demonstration in Washington
NEW YORK, May 31 /PRNewswire/ -- The Central Rabbinical Congress of the U.S.A. and Canada has cancelled a demonstration in Washington D.C., originally called for Tuesday, June 1.
"The demonstration was to protest the desecration of ancient cemeteries currently underway in the State of Israel, and was scheduled to coincide with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's visit to Washington," said Rabbi Menashe Fulop, a spokesman for the CRC. "Netanyahu was personally involved in the decision to build over the cemeteries. However, Netanyahu subsequently changed his plans and decided not to visit Washington at this time.
"Furthermore, due to the Israeli military's actions over the past day, many groups and governments in the world have joined in protest against the State of Israel. The CRC also joins the world in condemning the Israeli military action; however, they were concerned that if the demonstration against the cemetery desecration were to be held at this time, it might be misconstrued by some as a protest solely against the military action, and then their message regarding the Zionists' anti-religious decrees would not be heard.
"For both of the above reasons, this demonstration has been postponed until a more opportune moment," Rabbi Fulop concluded.
The Central Rabbinical Congress, established in 1952, is a worldwide organization representing over 150 Orthodox communities.
