CQ Roll Call Names Bloomberg's Steven Komarow as CQ News Director and VP
WASHINGTON, Jan. 13, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- CQ Roll Call, an Economist Group business, announced the appointment of Steven Komarow as CQ News Director and Vice President, overseeing its premier news and analysis products.
A veteran foreign correspondent and newsroom manager, Komarow's experiences range from chasing former House Speaker Jim Wright down the hallways of Congress to smuggling a rescue dog out of Afghanistan over the Khyber Pass to exploring the "spider hole" where Saddam Hussein was finally caught by U.S. forces.
"When Steve expressed an interest in joining CQ Roll Call, we knew we were being presented with a unique opportunity to make a strategic hire for our newsroom," said CQ Roll Call Executive Vice President and Managing Director Keith White.
"I'm excited to join CQ Roll Call, which has always had the inside track on the policy workings of Congress and continues to hold a unique position in Washington journalism," Komarow said. "I look forward to introducing new ideas and new products to propel this storied news organization into the future."
Komarow, who will report to Chief Content Officer and Senior Vice President David Ellis, will join CQ Roll Call on January 15.
"I know Steve as a trusted colleague, first-class journalist, and mentor to some of the most talented young reporters in Washington – several of whom we have the fortune to already have in our newsroom," said Ellis. "He's the kind of editor people clamor to work for, and I'm absolutely delighted he's bringing his wide range of skills to our newsroom."
Komarow has a deep attachment to Congress and served as chairman of the Standing Committee of Correspondents in 1992 when he was AP's chief congressional correspondent. He has covered presidential campaigns for the AP and defense for USA Today, where he was deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq where he was embedded with the Army during the invasion.
In 2006, he returned to the AP as Deputy International Editor based in New York, and two years later returned to Washington as Deputy Bureau Chief, helping to manage coverage of the 2008 presidential elections. Komarow joined Bloomberg in 2010 to lead its defense team, and most recently led the wire service's coverage of the Obama White House, the Justice Department and Homeland Security Department.
Komarow is also an adjunct lecturer on political and military journalism for Northwestern University's Washington, D.C. program. He holds a B.A. in political science from George Washington University.
