The global syngas production is anticipated to increase by 8.7% annually to reach 117,400 MW thermal by 2018. Syngas is primarily used for the production of chemical derivatives such as ammonia, methanol, hydrogen, and oxo chemicals. These derivatives are further used for the production of several other derivatives; for example, ammonia for urea and others, and methanol for formaldehyde and others. Similarly, hydrogen is used for refinery operations, production of ammonia, and several other applications. However, syngas is finding an increased usage for the generation of electricity and clean transportation fuels, such as gasoline, diesel, and SNG (synthetic natural gas). The main growth driver for this is the adoption of clean coal technology such as IGCC (integrated gasification combined cycle) which enables the production of electricity and fuels with minimum impact on the environment.
The other growth opportunities for the market include utilization of stranded gas reserves for GTL (gas to liquid) operations and tapping the underground inaccessible coal reserves for underground coal gasification (UCG) operations. The major restraint in the market is the high capital cost required for these operations. However, with advancement in technology, the effect of this restraint will decrease in future.
Asia-Pacific has been identified as the largest market in the next five years among all the regional markets. China, due to high demand and availability of abundant reserves of coal, is the current leader in syngas production. High population in the region is resulting in the increased demand for food and energy, which is resulting in an increased demand of ammonia and methanol. The other major market is North America which will grow with the highest rate in the next five years. Syngas usage for the production of electricity will drive the market in this region. The other regions covered are Middle East & Africa, Europe, and South America.
The major syngas derivatives covered are chemicals, liquid fuels, power, and gaseous fuels. Chemical derivatives such as ammonia, methanol, hydrogen, oxo chemicals, n-butanol, and DME (dimethyl ether) have also been covered. The market share for all derivatives has been given with respect to various regions and application in KT (kilotons) and $million.
