CHSE Cites New Report as Cause for Concern in Road to Successful Implementation of Common Core State Standards
WASHINGTON, Jan. 6, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A new report released today by the Center on Education Policy (CEP) identifies areas of critical need as states begin the process of implementing common core state standards, according to the Campaign for High School Equity (CHSE), a coalition of civil rights organizations focused on high school education reform.
Key findings from the CEP report indicate that many states face challenges in efforts to align teacher assessment with standards and ensure that standards prepare students for higher education. Absent a comprehensive approach that establishes high standards for every student and ensures both that educational policies are aligned to these standards and that communities of color are involved in the transformative process, CHSE says this movement will do little to address the dropout crisis and close the achievement gap. While the report finds that momentum is building around the standards, CHSE is calling on education leaders at the state and community levels to engage communities of color in the process of developing strategies for effective implementation of the standards that will improve academic opportunities for all students, especially students of color, who are disproportionately affected by low academic standards.
