Champion Cheese Driver to Race in Germany for Volkswagen
Caputo Sponsored Megenbier to Compete in 2010 Scirocco Cup
MELROSE PARK, Ill., March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Caputo sponsored Timmy Megenbier, the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup Champion, is preparing for his next stride in motorsports. He has traveled to Europe to compete in the newly-announced 2010 Volkswagen Scirocco R Cup series.
The Scirocco R Cup will replace the ADAC Volkswagen Polo cup for 2010. This series will be staged as the partner series of the popular DTM German touring car championship. The Volkswagen Scirocco R Cup participants will race factory-prepped Scirocco R models with compressed natural gas-powered 2.0 liter turbocharged engines. Each racecar reduces CO2 emissions by 80 percent compared to conventional engines due to the use of Bio-CNG fuel.
"Coming off of last year being in the spec series, it will be hard now because we are all equal," Megenbier said. "You have to make sure you do everything correct when making a pass. There really is no extra gain because everyone is so equal."
The Scirocco Cup starts in April and will consist of nine races over seven weekends including eight races across Germany and one U.K. round at the Brand Hatch circuit. This will be broadcast live in over 300 million homes in 100 countries worldwide in addition to the 80,000 spectators who will be present at each race.
"We're proud of Timmy's success," said Nat Caputo, President of Wiscon Corporation. "He continues to be a great inspiration for the Caputo team."
In preparation for the Scirocco Cup, Megenbier is currently attending a fitness camp at Oberjoch in the mountains of Germany. This extensive training focuses on further developing stamina, strength and coordination. Megenbier will be involved in numerous events during the training including spinning, mountain running, cross-country skiing, yoga and indoor football. In addition to the training, Megenbier is working at Volkswagen Motorsport during the day and taking German lessons at night.
"I enjoy working on the race cars at Volkswagen Motorsports," said Megenbier. "Now I understand the effort they put into the cars to get them ready for us. It takes a lot of time and hard work."
The Melrose Park, Illinois native has been racing in national events since age 14. Megenbier started out with small karts at age four and advanced to more powerful karts as his racing career progressed. In 2006 he made the shift to car racing and in 2007 he moved on to sedan racing. Caputo has been a major sponsor for Megenbier for 5 years.
