CEO Oliver Galang Launches Contest for iPhone 6 to Promote First App
Galang uses computer background and gaming insight to create Treasure Match, a new gaming app where players are currently competing for the new iPhone 6
SAN DIEGO, Aug. 12, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Back in high school, Oliver Galang was a computer whiz, but his mom sold his computer when she found him playing computer games till two in the morning. After high school, he was offered a $25,000 bonus to join the U.S. Army and become a computer specialist. Unfortunately, he got into a surfing accident and his dreams of becoming the next Bill Gates disappeared.
With stories like Flappy Birds, Candy Crush, and Kim Kardashian: Hollywood, Galang decided to get his feet wet again. "I just heard rumors of independent game developers making tens of thousands a day, so I wanted to take a stab at it," Galang said. He's hoping his new free game Treasure Match (with no in-app purchases) will be the next biggest gaming app.
When asked about his game, he said, "I just saw my girlfriend scratching a Scratcher and thought, 'Hmm, maybe I can make a game out of this.'" Galang used to be a high roller, betting up to $10,000 a hand on blackjack. He even authored a book called, "Card Counting: The Real Truth in Blackjack" and was featured on Good Morning San Diego http://youtu.be/BCkhpuWw-Rg. However, after a few bad reviews he decided to give up the whole book writing business. "People are going to believe what they're believe. I can't change that."
With his computer programming skills a bit rusty, he decided to team up with a leading game development company called 19Studios. "Amit and Swaraj are great. We worked out a few bugs like presenting the treasure chests in .35 and .40 seconds. Eventually, we settled on .40 seconds. I really wanted .35 seconds, though."
When asked about why he developed a casino type app, he said, "I was always intrigued why people played slots. I always thought it was boring because all you have to do is hit a button. With blackjack or card counting, you're always thinking. I decided to mix the two together by presenting what's behind the treasure in half a second, making the players think."
Currently, Treasure Match is holding a contest. The person with the highest score of the day, until the iPhone 6 is released, will win the new 4.7-inch iPhone 6.
