Centrify Corporation Files Patent Litigation Against Quest Software Inc.
Centrify Responds to Quest Patent Suit; Expects to Prevail in Court as it Continues to Prevail in the Market Place
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Aug. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Centrify Corporation, the leader in securing and auditing access to cross-platform systems and applications through Active Directory, announced it has responded to the news that a patent infringement lawsuit was recently filed against Centrify and another software company by Quest Software Inc. (Nasdaq: QSFT) in the United States District Court for the District of Utah by filing its own patent infringement suit against Quest in the Northern District of California. In its Complaint, Centrify alleges that Quest Authentication Services infringes U.S. Patent No. 7,591,005, a key technology of Centrify DirectControl that facilitates the capability for UNIX and Linux service accounts and root accounts to be authenticated within a centralized directory. Centrify's Complaint seeks damages and injunctive relief prohibiting Quest Software from continuing to infringe Centrify's patent.
Commenting on the Quest lawsuit, Tom Kemp, President and CEO of Centrify stated: "We were surprised to see Quest's lawsuit, particularly given the patent asserted against us, the strength of our intellectual property position, and the fact that we had never been contacted by Quest Software regarding any concerns they may have had regarding intellectual property. As a technology company, we understand the significance of intellectual property matters, and respect the rights of others. For example, Centrify has licensed from Microsoft specific patents and protocols around Active Directory and Windows Group Policy, which we have utilized to help build our technology that integrates and secures heterogeneous computing environments. We firmly believe that we do not infringe any valid claim of the asserted Quest patent and believe that the claim against us is entirely without merit."
Kemp went on to note: "Quest's allegation of patent infringement is a baseless attempt to distract Centrify and slow its leadership and significant growth vis-a-vis Quest in the market for securing and auditing access to cross-platform systems and applications. Quest's filing of a lawsuit against multiple companies and issuing a press release at 8:42 pm on a Friday night is emblematic of companies trying to compete in the courtroom instead of the marketplace. We will use all the tools at our disposal to vigorously defend Centrify, including actions such as the one we took today, and expect to prevail in court, as we continue to prevail in the market place."
