BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobile World Congress -- Cavium, Inc. (NASDAQ: CAVM), a leading provider of semiconductor products that enterprise, data center, wired and wireless communications, today announced UniFiRAN, an end-to-end software solution that will enable a seamless RAN (Radio Access Network) architecture in 3G and 4G networks. The scalable software running on Cavium's OCTEON and OCTEON Fusion processors allows a unified set of applications to run across platforms ranging from 3G/4G small cells to micro and macro cells, to Cloud RAN configurations.

Presently, telecommunications equipment manufacturers use different processor architectures in their small cell, macro cell and Cloud RAN programs. This resulting platform incompatibility reduces hardware flexibility and scalability and greatly limits software re-use. In contrast, service providers will greatly benefit from Cavium's unified software architecture and its OCTEON multi-core product line to scale smoothly from small cells, through micro and macro cells to the upcoming virtualized base station or Cloud RAN. Cavium's state-of–the-art OCTEON multicore processors are being used by leading Tier 1 vendors to efficiently implement Cloud RAN and NFV applications. Because SDN / NFV solutions require virtualization capability in compute, networking and storage systems, Cavium's multicore SoCs with support for standard Virtualization technologies (such as Virtualized Cores, IOMMU, and PCIe/SR-IOV based interfaces to HW acceleration engines) are ideally suited to the task.
"Cavium, a leader in wireless infrastructure, is shipping a scalable product line spanning small cells to micro/macro base stations and the Cloud RAN. The addition of the OCTEON Fusion product line with PHY and baseband processing was a key enabler, allowing Cavium to extend their products across the entire wireless infrastructure ecosystem. Cavium is well positioned with their OCTEON processors to also deliver the benefits of cloud based deployments to the wireless equipment manufactures and their carrier customers," said Linley Gwennap, President of The Linley Group "Cavium is well positioned to benefit from the move to heterogeneous networks."
"Cavium is a leader in network processors for wireless infrastructure, and we are proud to announce this end-to-end initiative, which enables us to address the whole RAN in a single, scalable offering," commented Raj Singh, GM VP of Cavium's Wireless Business Unit. "Cloud-RAN is only one aspect of a broader trend to rethink the traditional topology of their networks in order to cope with the pressures of the mobile data explosion on spectrum, budget and wireless capacity. While different operators are considering it in different ways, the concept of centralizing and virtualizing the RAN is critical to the strategies of many carriers."
Cavium will be demonstrating the range of products, from small cell SoC, through OCTEON processors, to NFV at Mobile World Congress, 2K60 in Hall 2, Gran Fira Barcelona 24-28 February 2014.
