Cavium Joins Telecom Infra Project to Enable OpenCellular Access to LTE, LTE-A and NFV/5G Technologies
Demonstrates Live OpenCellular with LTE MIMO, in Hall 2 M33 at Mobile World Congress
SAN JOSE, Calif. and BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 27, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Cavium, Inc., (NASDAQ: CAVM), a leading provider of semiconductor products that enable secure and intelligent processing for enterprise, data center, wired and wireless networking announced that it has joined the Telecom Infra Project (TIP), an initiative founded by Facebook, SK Telecom, Deutsche Telekom and others, that encourages the adoption of an open approach to global networks. As part of an ongoing commitment to support advances in telecom infrastructure networks, Cavium will contribute key wireless access technologies to TIP's OpenCellular project group in order to address the demand for faster, more agile networks around the globe.
Cavium will contribute and support the design of a complete, production-ready hardware design for a single sector LTE 2T2R MIMO (64/128 user) for OpenCellular in the second half of 2017. The design will be based on the OCTEON Fusion CNF7130 baseband processor, and will also have the associated end-to-end L1 to L3 software stack, ensuring easy and predictable deployment. Cavium will also provide open source access to certain APIs to allow the community to further enhance and expand the capabilities of the LTE cell. Additional software contributions of open APIs for the transport layer and timing synchronization are also planned. Cavium will continue to offer its direct licensees the ability to provide highly differentiated LTE basestation solutions based on the same processor technology. Cavium will continue the contribution and community support effort via its latest OCTEON Fusion-M four sector 8T8R, multimode (GSM/WCDMA/LTE) CNF7330 processor and reference design, capable of supporting 512 to 1024 users. This state-of-the-art device supports advanced features compliant with 3GPP releases 12 and 13, and provides an excellent platform for dense deployments. In addition, Cavium will, provide open source access to various NFV and 5G APIs to allow the community to further broaden its reach into new areas.
"We welcome Cavium's membership and contribution to the Telecom Infra Project. The combination of their hardware designs, open APIs and robust software offering provides a near market ready solution to the TIP community," said Dr. Alex Jinsung Choi, CTO of SK Telecom and TIP Chairman. "We look forward to working with the community to deploy these exciting technologies for LTE, LTE-A and eventually 5G."
"We share TIP's vision of open, connected telecom infrastructure with universal access," said Raj Singh, Vice President & General Manager, Network & Communication Group at Cavium. "OCTEON Fusion-M baseband processors are extensively deployed in advanced carrier networks and are field proven designs. We believe our contribution will help propagate advanced wireless telecom technologies to the broader community allowing for new and exciting innovations in the industry."
