Brooklyn Army Terminal Announced as a Project of the Year Finalist for 2015
Princeton Power Systems' energy storage Microgrid takes one of the top Solar Projects in North America at Intersolar's Annual Event
PRINCETON, N.J., July 6, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Princeton Power Systems, a leading global designer and manufacturer of technology products and embedded software for energy storage, microgrid operations, and electric vehicle charging, has announced that their Brooklyn Army Terminal project is a finalist for the 2015 Intersolar Project of the Year Award. Princeton Power's Alcatraz Island Microgrid was named a 2014 Project of the Year at last year's event, highlighting the company's pioneering work on both coasts of the USA.
Built in 1919, the 97-acre Brooklyn Army Terminal site features 4 million square feet of indoor space and now integrates behind-the-meter battery storage, photovoltaics, Microgrid controls, and a building management system, to demonstrate the benefits of onsite renewable energy with energy storage for reducing peak energy use. The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) and ConEdison developed the project, which demonstrates smart grid technologies with the potential to help New York City reach its PlaNYC sustainability and resiliency goals, including 30% reduction in citywide greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
"The Northeast is a rapidly emerging market for energy storage and solar microgrids, particularly New York City," explained Darren Hammell, Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer at Princeton Power Systems. "Energy storage provides resilience and backup power to buildings that were affected by outages during Superstorm Sandy, while saving building owners money by reducing demand charges."
Like the Alcatraz Island Microgrid, the Brooklyn Army Terminal project took into account the unique preservation considerations of integrating advanced energy technologies into a site with deep historic significance and protected structures. Princeton Power's GTIB converter and Energy Management Operating System platform were integrated with advanced lead-acid batteries and market aggregator services.
