Broadcom Announces Industry's First High Definition DTA Cable Set-Top Box SoC With Integrated Tuner and HDMI
Highly Integrated and Cost Effective HD SoC Enables North American Cable Operators to Transition Analog Subscribers Directly to HD
LAS VEGAS, Jan. 7/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- 2010 International CES -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced its next generation digital terminal adapter (DTA) cable set-top box (STB) system-on-a-chip (SoC) solution at this week's 2010 International CES in Las Vegas. The new DTA solution is the industry's first to combine high definition (HD) video, an integrated 1GHz cable tuner and HDMI capabilities in an ultra small form factor. As HD continues to proliferate, the Broadcom® BCM7572 HD DTA solution enables North American cable operators to transition subscribers from analog programming directly to HD programming.
Highlights:
- Over the past decade, the North American cable industry has focused much of its attention, and investment dollars, on value-added services (in addition to basic cable TV services) including HD video services, according to In-Stat market research.
- HD DTA solutions allow North American cable operators to transition analog and standard definition (SD) digital broadcasts directly to HD.
- Broadcom's BCM7572 solution paves the way for the expanded network capacity that operators require in order to provide additional HD content and more value-added services such as HD video-on-demand (VoD) and higher speed DOCSIS® 3.0 data and voice services.
- The BCM7572 reduces the manufacturer's overall bill-of-materials (BOM) cost while adding advanced functionality including:
- High levels of integration: An SCTE-40+ 1 GHZ silicon cable tuner exceeds the SCTE-40 specification and performance requirements demanded by North American cable operators. Further integration includes a QAM demodulator, a highly efficient MIPS32®-class CPU, a data transport processor, a programmable audio core, four video and two audio digital-to-analog converters, and peripheral interfaces for a variety of STB control/receiver functions.
- HD: An integrated HDMI transmitter and HD MPEG2/AVC decoder to drive high quality HD displays from an ultra small form factor.
- Security: Advanced security supporting a wide range of card and cardless security devices.
- Reduced memory footprint: A x16 DDR2 memory controller and serial flash enable the minimum footprint for an HD DTA.
- Low power: An integrated standby power management controller that enables ultra low power modes and allows for <100mW when in standby mode exceeding Energy Star requirements.
- Broadcom's BCM7572 is now sampling to cable set-top box manufacturers.
