Bridgepoint Education's Ashford University Introduces Specializations in Reading Literacy and Library and Media
SAN DIEGO, Sept. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Bridgepoint Education, Inc. (NYSE: BPI), a provider of postsecondary education services focused on providing higher access to higher education, announced today that Ashford University has introduced two new specializations for its Master of Arts in Education program. The new specializations cover the areas of Reading Literacy and Library and Media. With the addition of these two specializations, Ashford's Master of Arts in Education now offers students 14 different areas of specialization.
The Reading Literacy specialization focuses on building additional expertise and understanding of the necessary skills for instruction in reading and writing. The curriculum was built with reference to the International Reading Association Standards for Reading Professionals. The Reading Literacy specialization covers 12 credits in addition to the core courses for the Master of Arts in Education degree. Students with an interest in continuing their education in a specialized area of Reading Literacy with a focus specifically on reading instruction may work as a reading tutor, reading specialist, curriculum coordinator, text book author, or in many other related fields.
"The Reading Literacy Specialization provides a fresh approach to advanced knowledge and skills in reading and writing instruction to support struggling readers," said Dr. Joen Rottler, dean of Ashford's College of Education.
The Library and Media specialization will help students build awareness and understanding of the work of school librarians and media specialists who support school programs. In addition to their core coursework for the Master of Arts in Education program, students will complete 12 credits related to Library and Media Services in this specialization. The American Library Association and the American Association of School Librarians were referenced for the creation of this specialization. Students pursuing a specialization in Library and Media may work in a school library, a computer lab setting, a school district office, or they may choose to pursue a career as a virtual librarian or to serve in some other role in education or business.
"This specialization offers students a broad look into the area of media and other library resources for today's schools and schools of the future," said Dr. Rottler.
The specializations in Reading Literacy and Library and Media are currently available online only. They do not include any additional professional licensures or certifications.
