Breakthrough Behavioral, Inc. Adopts the 2020 Mom Project Recommendations for Health Care Provider Networks
New and expecting moms in California, Texas and Maryland can now obtain online access to therapists for pregnancy, postpartum depression and other anxiety-related issues through a counseling network on Breakthrough.com
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Breakthrough Behavioral, Inc. (https://www.breakthrough.com/), a company that connects people with counseling and psychiatric providers, today announced it has adopted the 2020 Mom Project's recommendations for health care provider networks (http://www.2020momproject.com/health_insurers_recommendations). Breakthrough Behavioral is able to identify mental health specialists in provider networks in California, Texas and Maryland who have expertise in treating postpartum depression and other maternal mental health disorders, as well as experience in helping women and families adjust to parenthood.
"Because parenthood can present new challenges and emotions, we saw a need to provide mothers with online access to counseling and medication support from the comfort of their own homes, said Mark Goldenson, CEO of Breakthrough. "We believe moms in particular will find our support services extremely helpful and easy to use."
"Postpartum depression and anxiety are age-old problems that most doctors recognize, but few know how to treat, especially in a timely fashion," said Judy Mikacich, MD an OB/GYN and supporter of the 2020 Mom Project. "It's extremely helpful to mothers, families and health care providers to be able to identify maternal mental health specialists who can offer support and treatment options."
According to Postpartum Support International (http://www.postpartum.net/), up to 20 percent of expecting and new moms will experience depression or anxiety, yet most will never receive the help they need. The 2020 Mom Project is setting out to change that by the year 2020. The campaign promotes simple changes that provider networks, health insurance companies and doctors can adopt to raise awareness of these disorders, and improve diagnosis and treatment.
"Because Breakthrough helps clients find, book and talk to a therapist online, women will be able to see a licensed therapist or psychiatrist immediately without having to drive, shower or change a baby," said Joy Burkhard, founder of the 2020 Mom Project. "These things all act as barriers that can prevent many new mothers from obtaining help."
Several major insurers are contracted with Breakthrough, which means patients can use Breakthrough's services and just pay their insurance co-pay. Patients who don't have insurance through one of these companies can also see a Breakthrough provider by paying directly or working with a Breakthrough clinician to determine if their insurance company provides coverage for behavioral telehealth.
