NEW YORK, Nov. 28, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Boxed.com, the online wholesale shopping club with no membership fees, will partner with Unilever and WIN (formerly Women in Need), the largest provider of shelter for homeless families in New York City, to deliver everyday essentials from Dove, Caress, Ponds, and Simple to eight women's shelters in the New York City area, along with twelve additional women's shelters across the country this Giving Tuesday.
"We are proud to be working with Unilever to provide these everyday items to women's shelters across the country," says Nitasha Mehta, Associate Director of Reengagement Marketing at Boxed. "We love delivering joy every day but never more so than when we can have a real impact on the lives of women and children in need."
This is not the first time Boxed has taken a stand for women. Earlier this year, Boxed made a bold move by reducing the sales tax amount from the list price on feminine hygiene products that are subject to a luxury tax, such as tampons and pads, and also decreased the cost of certain women's products where price is shown to be greater than the male equivalent.
"As New York's largest provider of shelter for families and children, WIN knows all too well how prevalent a history of domestic violence is among homeless women," said Christine Quinn, President and CEO of WIN. "In fact, a quarter of all families in New York City's homeless shelter system reported domestic violence to be the direct cause of their homelessness. Often women leaving an abusive environment need to do so quickly, with few belongings or niceties, and kindness and compassion go a long way toward helping them move forward with their lives. We are incredibly grateful to Boxed and Unilever for the gifts to our residents of personal items and toiletries this season; they are always needed and will make the holidays a little brighter."
Many don't realize that one out of every three women will be abused at some point in her life. Battering is the single major cause of injury to women, exceeding rapes, muggings and auto accidents combined. Also staggering is that the number one urgent need for shelters is toiletries.
